Egypt: World leaders greeted by Egyptian president, UN secretary general at COP27 climate conference

Over 100 Heads of State and Governments gathered for the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh on Monday.

Footage shows exterior shots of the International Convention Centre, as well as leaders arriving to be greeted by Egyptian President Abdel el-Sisi and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Both hosts chose to wear masks, as did the likes of French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Newly installed Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak of the UK and Giorgia Meloni of Italy were among those who opted to go mask-free.

The conference will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and negotiating climate finance, as well as achieving the goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement; limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

COP27 continues until November 18.
