Description

Protesters gathered in Kabul on Thursday to rally for women's rights and demonstrate against the spread of poverty in Afghanistan amid growing economic difficulties following the Taliban's takeover.

Protesters chanted slogans such as “girls schools must be opened” and “we are the voice of hungry people” as they issued their demands.

Participants demonstrated against limitations on access to education for girls in Afghanistan, introduced by the Taliban after they seized power in August.

“Girls aged seven to 12 cannot go to school. Why can't our girls go to school here? Girls are not allowed to go to school here,” said protester Vahideh Amiri.

Another protester railed against the growing issue of poverty in Afghanistan which according to the International Monetary Fund will see its economy contract by up to 30 percent this year.

“The number of poor people has increased, as you can see around us, there are working children. There are children who are starving to death,” she said.

“We came to be the voice of those people and those children who do not have a piece of bread, to raise their voices. Our slogan is that we are the voice of the poor nation of the country,” she added.

According to reports and videos circulating online, some journalists were attacked by alleged Taliban members for covering the protest.
