Speaker of Lebanon's House of Representatives, Nabih Berri, received German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her delegation at the Beirut presidential palace on Wednesday.

Footage shows Baerbock arriving at the Ain El-Tineh Palace before sitting down for a bilateral meeting with Berri.

The meeting was attended by German Ambassador to Lebanon Kurt Georg Stoeckl-Stillfried and Berri's media adviser Ali Hamdan. Discussions focused on the escalating situation in Lebanon amid Israel's military offensive against militant group Hezbollah.

"The humanitarian situation in Lebanon grows more desperate every day. Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing, and hospitals are working at full capacity," Baerbock said in a statement.

"In Lebanon, too, we see terrorists irresponsibly hiding behind civilians and continuing to fire missiles at Israel from there. That is unacceptable," she added.

Baerbock also stressed that Israel "must adhere to international humanitarian law in its operations, and all parties should protect UN peacekeepers."

Israel "has managed to clearly weaken the terrorist Hezbollah in recent weeks," she added. "We must work with our partners in the United States, Europe, and the Arab world to devise a viable diplomatic solution that preserves the legitimate security interests of Israel as well as those of Lebanon."

Israel has conducted a ground incursion into parts of southern Lebanon, as well as an ongoing campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets over the past month. Lebanon's Ministry of Health stated that over 2,500 people had been killed at the time of publication.

The current escalation between Israel and Hezbollah began last month with explosions of wireless communications devices used by Hezbollah, which killed dozens and injured thousands. The sides have exchanged cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza war.
