Description

Indian artist Sudarshan Pattnaik and dozens of his students gathered at Blue Flag Beach in Odisha to create the largest Santa Claus sculpture ever from sand and two tons of red onions - and raise awareness about climate change.

Footage recorded on Sunday shows the installation, with the onion bulbs forming Santa's bright red coat, as well as a large inscription reading ‘Merry Christmas.’

"Santa Claus giving a message 'Gift a Plant'. If we gift a plant then our Earth will go green and we need a lot of green because we all know [that] the climate change impact is going around the world. So we created this sculpture with Santa Claus and this is the message," said Pattnaik.

The sculpture, 100 foot long, 20 foot high and 40 foot wide, set a new record, with Pattnaik and his 32 students awarded medals and certificates by the World Book of Records of India on Sunday.

"We are very honoured today because the organisers from the World Book of Records of India have honoured us and they have announced this is the world record because this is the biggest sculpture from onion and sand of Santa Claus," Pattnaik said.

In 2017, Pattnaik together with 45 students broke the Guinness World Record for building the tallest 48-foot-tall sand castle at Puri beach.
