Columns of protesters marched through Independence Avenue towards October Square in the city centre, carrying former white-red-white flags of Belarus, ribbons, balloons, flowers, and posters while chanting “leave.”
Earlier, Tikhanovskaya said in a statement that workers, teachers, and students had joined the strike after the opposition’s deadline for President Alexander Lukashenko to step down expired at midnight.
Tikhanovskaya delivered the “people's ultimatum” to Lukashenko on October 13 and gave him 13 days to respond.
According to local media reports, protests were taking place in other cities of the country as well.
Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election that saw long-time leader Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.
