Thousands of people took to Minsk’s Victors Avenue to participate in a rally opposing the recent inauguration of Belarusian President Aleksander Lukashenko on Sunday.

The rally, called the ‘National inauguration of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya,’ started near the Minsk Hero City Obelisk, after that the protesters headed towards the outskirts of the city to avoid police checkpoints in the centre of the Belarusian capital.

Footage shows protesters with white-red-white flags. It was also reported that the column of protesters walked more than ten kilometres on foot during the rally.

About 200 people have been detained during opposition protests which were held in various Belarusian cities throughout the day, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus reported.

Earlier in the day, a rally in support of Alexander Lukashenko was also held in Minsk.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election of August 9 that saw incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.

On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
