Thousands of runners took part in the traditional San Silvestre Vallecana race in Madrid on Sunday.

Footage shows the competitors running through the streets of the Spanish capital and dancing during the event. The video also features Madrid’s Mayor Jose Luis Martinez Almeida interacting with the runners ahead of the competition.

"The best way to end the year is for those of us who are athletes and love sport and also run in Madrid, which is wonderful; the organization is amazing; the DJs, the music, and the costumes. As soon as you get on the subway, you feel euphoric and eager to run; you can't wait to start," said one of the competitors.

According to local media reports, at least 40,000 people participated in the run.

The Uruguayan runner Nicolas Cuestas reportedly won the competition after running 10 kilometres in approximately 29 minutes.
