Description

Thousands of protesters joined the so-called "March of unity" in the Belarusian capital Minsk and in other cities on Sunday to demonstrate against police brutality, election results and incumbent leader Aleksander Lukashenko.

Footage shows hundreds of protesters flooding the streets of Belarusian capital with numerous white-red flags. Police officers, army troops, various armoured military vehicles and water cannons can be seen blocking some areas to prevent protesters from moving on.

As the rally moved along the Lenina Street and Nezavisimostu Avenue, protesters closed in on the residence of incumbent president Lukashenko where they were stopped by a police barrier.

Rallies also took place on the streets of Vitebsk, Brest and Grodno on Sunday.

According to Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry, hundreds were detained in the rallies across the country. The exact number of detainees will be revealed on Monday.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election that saw incumbent president Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.

On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
