Description

A local bakery in Rutland attempted to broke the record for the world’s largest whoopie pie, during the Vermont festival celebrating the sweet treats on Saturday.

Footage shows dozens of locals gathering to watch the judges weighing the massive chocolate cake filled with fluffy marshmallow and icing, before sampling it and the other wares on offer at the festival.

According to both media reports and Dream Maker Bakers owner Megan Wagner, the pie weighed in at an impressive 1,187 pounds (538.4 KG), beating the previous record of 1,062 pounds (481.7 KG) set by Wicked Whoopies in Gardiner, Maine.

"The cake had about 150 pounds of flour. Probably the most astonishing measurement was the powder sugar involved in the fillings, which was almost 350 pounds of powdered sugar, another 150 of butter, shortening and marshmallow fluff," she explained.

Activities at the third annual Rutland Whoopie Pie Festival included sampling whoopie pies from 20 vendors, face painting and square dancing. Visitors also had the chance to meet characters from GhostBusters and Star Wars.

The event was held on Saturday, September 14, at Center Street and Merchants Row from 12:00 to 17:00 local time (16:00 to 21:00 GMT).
