Description

Female activists held a protest and presser in Kabul, on Sunday, after the Taliban changed the name of the Women's Affairs Ministry and replaced it with the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

The group of women stood and held signs in front of a building that once housed the country's Women’s Affairs Ministry.

"The Taliban haven't fulfilled any promises made during the conference in Doha, so we female activists and female politicians have gathered here today. The Taliban did not keep their promises, they disregarded human rights, and they are holding women hostage," said one of the activists taking part in the protest.

The virtue and vice ministry previously existed but was disbanded after the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 following five years of Taliban rule. In 2006, then-President Hamid Karzai re-established a similar but less powerful government branch following pressure from religious conservatives.

Several women-led protests have been met with violence in the Afghan capital since the Taliban takeover of the country.
