Description

Houses were damaged and streets were seen filled with mud following torrential rains in the city of Bologna on Monday after flooding in the city over the weekend.

"We were so scared the other night because the water kept rising. Fortunately, it stayed below the edge of the garden wall, so we had little damage," Laurizio, a resident said.

Footage shows locals cleaning muddy streets with shovels, damaged houses, blocked roads and an overflowing river in the area.

"The river burst from there because the Ravone torrent runs through there. Right behind this house in the small street passes the Ravone. It was certainly obstructed more by debris than by rainfall because that night there were many trees coming out of the breaking point. So there is a really serious problem that should be addressed by experts and not politicians," explained Francesco Lettieri, one of the locals.

According to local media reports, other than Via Saffi, two other important streets near the historical centre of the city of Bologna, Via Andrea Costa and Via San Mamolo, were also seriously damaged.

Flooding occurred in several cities of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region over the weekend following extreme weather. Last month the region around Bologna experienced severe flooding while in May 2023 the same region was submerged in water, leaving 17 people dead and causing €10 billion worth of damage.
