Trump also added that he and the Chancellor "have had a terrific relationship" before hailing the US and Germany's trade partnership.
Merkel in turn spoke about the topics the two leaders are scheduled to discuss.
"We are going to talk about international issues, the developments of the international funds too, especially about what has been happening in West Africa. We will be also talking about counter-terrorism. Of course, Iran will also be on our agenda today. I very much look forward to that exchange," said the German leader.
At the end of the meeting, Trump told Merkel that he was looking forward to 'spending time' with her rather than watching the Democratic primary debates.
