Argentine President Alberto Fernandez expressed his view that the country could be a 'springboard' for developing cooperation between Russia and Latin America, during a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday.
"I think Argentina could be, to some extent, a gateway for Russia to Latin America. We could be a springboard for you to develop cooperation with Latin American countries," said Fernandez.
The Argentine President added that a striking example of the development of such cooperation was the supply of Russian vaccines to Argentina, from where they were later distributed to Ecuador, Peru and Paraguay.
Putin went on to thank his colleague for being the first country in the Western Hemisphere to register a Russian vaccine against the Sputnik V coronavirus.
"Today the first contract [for vaccine supplies] has almost been fulfilled already. Almost 15 million doses out of 20 million have been delivered to Argentina," said Putin.
Fernandez ended the meeting by announcing that he is in favour of developing cooperation with Russia and ridding Argentina of its 'dependence on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and on the United States.'
According to Fernandez, since the end of the last century, Argentina's economic situation and debt to the IMF has been heavily dependent on the United States.
