Description

Crowds of pension protesters were met with riot police outside Opera Bastille, the opera house in Paris, during large-scale demonstrations on Thursday.

Footage shows demonstrators standing on the venue’s steps and jeering as officers filed past to secure the venue. Protesters chanted as police moved some of them from the walls and prevented the crowd from moving further towards the building.

It took place during mass demonstrations against recent pension reforms, which raised the retirement age from 62 to 64.

President Emmanuel Macron’s government argued the changes were needed to keep the system sustainable, after forcing them through without a vote in the National Assembly.

A decision on the legality of the reforms is expected from the Constitutional Court on Friday.
