Description

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin hit out at former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo’s trip to Taiwan, while speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday.

”The former politician you mentioned had a bankrupt reputation, whose clumsy anti-China actions were aimed at the personal political gain and will not succeed,” he said.

Pompeo, who also visited the island in March, told a conference in Taiwan on Tuesday that the US should end what he called 'blind engagement' with Beijing, accusing the Biden administration of making the relationship 'even more ambiguous'.

On Monday, US Vice President Kamala Harris met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo and condemned China's actions in the Taiwan Strait.

Beijing instigated a series of drills following the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei in August, accusing Washington of meddling in its affairs.

"US House Speaker ignoring China's repeated dissuasion for four months, the US Speaker of the House of Representatives visited Taiwan and called Taiwan a country. China's countermeasures are reasonable, legal, necessary and appropriate," Wang Wenbin continued.

China regards the island as part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, while Taiwan has never officially declared independence.
