Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh condemned the "normalization" of ties between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi during a press conference in Tehran on Monday after Israeli President Isaac Herzog became the first-ever sitting Israeli president to visit the United Arab Emirates.
Hinting at the UAE's 2020 peace agreement with Israel and the president’s visit, Khatibzadeh hit out at the actions "taken by some countries" in the Arab world that have started to normalise relations with Israel.
The visit comes at a time of growing tensions after the UAE announced it had destroyed a ballistic missile launch site in Yemen on Monday after shooting down a missile targeting the UAE allegedly fired by members of the Iranian-backed Houthi movement.
Khatibzadeh added that if such states were to "hear the awakening call of their nations as soon as possible, and end this rift-making in the Islamic world and the Arab world,” it would be “much better for the future of the region."
The spokesperson also discussed the international Iran nuclear talks in Vienna which are entering their final stages, reacting to statements by US officials and those taking part in the JCPOA negotiations. "If the other parties, especially the United States, have made their own decisions when they return to Vienna, approve the rightful demands of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and demand nothing more from JCPOA - because we will not accept anything less than the JCPOA - rest assured that a lasting, reliable and good agreement can be reached quickly," said Khatibzadeh.
