Hundreds of mourners from across Iran travelled to the Kerman Martyrs Cemetery on Monday to commemorate the third anniversary of the death of General Qassem Soleimani.

Mourners were seen lining up to pay their respects to the former commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps before kissing his tombstone.

Many who attended the ceremony expressed their desire for retribution over the death of the influential General, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020.

"Revenge won't wash away the sadness they imposed on us but we will take our revenge to let them know that it is not an easy thing to kill our beloved ones and make them martyrs," a mourner said.

“Iran will not give up on even a tiny bit of its severe revenge for this beloved martyr. We hope this strong revenge will be executed as a condolence for the people who are mourning for this martyr," added a second.

Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport, together with the deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis on January 3, 2020.

The Pentagon released a statement confirming the US had carried out the airstrike on the orders of then US President Donald Trump, calling it a "decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad."
