Description

The EU has no plans at the moment to impose further sanctions on Russia over the imprisonment of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said in Moscow on Friday.

"About further sanctions - there is no proposal by the time being by any member state," Borrel stated at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"The discussion will continue on the next Foreign Affairs Council of Ministers, and also the European Union leaders will have in March an important monographic discussion about the relationship between the European Union and Russia," the EU's top diplomat added.

During the press conference, Borrell also expressed hope that European Medicines Agency (EMA) will soon be able to certify the Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine for use inside the bloc.

“I am very happy to read the scientific report published in a prestigious magazine, scientific magazine Lancet, explaining the performance of the Russian vaccine,” said the diplomat.

Lavrov in his part mentioned that “a number of countries are interested in buying and producing this vaccine in their territory.” He added on Thursday US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had congratulated Russia on the success with Sputnik V.
