Dozens of soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) were sentenced to death at a trial in the rural commune of Lubero in the North Kivu Province on Friday.
Footage shows the convicted soldiers taking part in the trial, as well as locals watching the event.
According to local media reports, 25 soldiers, including two captains, were sentenced to death after being accused of desertion from the fight against the M23 rebel group.
It is also reported that the convicted soldiers were also accused of dissipating weapons of war, disobeying orders and theft.
Recently, local media reported that the M23 rebels had captured Kanya Bayonga, a town crucial to the trade networks of Butembo and Beni. This advance has caused residents to flee to nearby towns such as Miriki, Kirumba and Luofo amid growing panic.
