Chad celebrated its 64th Independence Day on Sunday with a military parade in the capital, N'Djamena, attended by President Mahamat Deby and other officials,
"For me, this is an exceptional celebration," Deby stated. "We're about to start a new era with a new dynamic, with the legislative elections coming up soon to preside over our constitution. So I call on everyone to get ready for a good start to the fifth republic."
40-year-old Deby assumed the leadership in April 2021 after the death of his father, former President Idriss Deby Itno, who was fatally wounded in northern Chad. Since then, Mahamat Deby has been leading a transitional government tasked with navigating Chad through ongoing political and military challenges.
Chad gained independence from France on August 11, 1960.
