Description

A search and rescue operation is ongoing after a three-storey building collapse in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh killed at least 10 people on Saturday, according to local officials.

"This is a very big incident. It has shocked us all," said one local, Mohammed Wakkar. "It has shocked us a lot. It was just a business of buffaloes. There was nothing else. There were buffaloes, cows, goats - a lot of them were buried."

Footage filmed on Sunday shows piles of rubble and debris in the aftermath of the collapse. Locals can be seen loading a dead animal into a truck as military personnel spoke to residents in the area. Meanwhile, workers can also be seen using excavators to clean up the damage.

The building reportedly collapsed around 16:00 local time. According to local media, at least 15 people were trapped under the rubble.

"Only human bodies have been removed. All the buffaloes and animals are still buried in the locality. The rescue work is still going on," said another local, Shanwas Ahmed.

According to local authorities, 10 people have died and four others injured. Those wounded are currently being treated in a local hospital as rescue workers continue to search for one more missing individual.

Local authorities have announced that they will be providing those impacted in the disaster with financial aid. Assistance will also be provided to those who lost livestock during the incident.
