Description

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was named TIME's Person of the Year, Wednesday, with archive footage showing some of the German leader's greatest moments during her chancellery in 2015.

Merkel was awarded the honourary award by TIME "for asking more of her country than most politicians would dare, for standing firm against tyranny as well as expedience and for providing steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply," according to TIME Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs.

Merkel has been at the helm of European politics during many of 2015's most gripping developments in current affairs and policy management. The Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) president has held significant sway in Greece's bid to break free from its debtors, the de-escalation of the Ukraine crisis, the brokering of Iran's nuclear deal and perhaps most noticeably, the direction of the ongoing refugee crisis.

Archive footage shows the German Chancellor hitting out at right-wing extremism during a speech in Heidenau later in the year. Merkel is also pictured denouncing November's Paris attacks at an address from Berlin. The potential effect that the 2015's TIME Person of the Year can have on the general public is also captured, as a guard is shown fainting during a state visit from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The TIME's Person of the Year award is presented to the individual or group that has had the most impact on the world during the year, with Merkel managing to beat the alleged leader of the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, and Iranian president Hassan Rouhani.
