Description

German President Frank Walter Steinmeier and leader of North Rhine-Westphalia and CDU leader Armin Laschet visited the areas which have been badly affected by deadly floods.

Laschet called the deadly floods 'disaster of the century' while giving a statement in Erfstadt on Saturday.

"What we are experiencing is a disaster of the century. It is also a national task and I am therefore glad that both the federal government and the prime minister colleagues from other federal states have said - we will fix this together and at the same time. We've also got the confirmation that the whole of Germany will help this region," Laschet stressed.

"Many have lost everything they've been building their whole lives. Belongings, their homes, roof over the head. We see localities, we see communities that have been marked by devastation, destruction," said Steinmeier.

"Much is lost and cannot be easily restored, but the biggest loss is of those who have lost their relatives in the floods. we mourn with those who have lost their friends, acquaintance, family members. Their destiny is breaking our hearts," Steinmeier added.

"Our crisis team was set up immediately and I am extremely grateful that we have received nationwide support. There are 6 rescue helicopters deployed, 35 rescue boats from the whole federal territory, that are supporting us here on site, " said Erftstadt mayor Carolin Weitzel.

Over the last few days, heavy rains and floods killed at least 150 people and left over 1,300 missing in the region.
