03:37Dozens of environmental activists blocked streets in downtown Berlin on Monday morning, protesting against the current climate policy of the German federal government.
According to the police, around 50 demonstrators from the Extinction Rebellion climate protection movement first interrupted traffic in the central Unter den Linden street close to governmental offices. Some activists glued their hands to asphalt, resisting the demands from the officials to clear the road. Others were holding banners and placards, calling for the immediate end of usage of fossil fuels and raising awareness of the climate crisis, while standing in the intersession with Friedrichstrasse street.
Later despite heavy rain around 100 people blocked a road leading to Potsdamer Platz square with a pink tower, that resembled a drilling rig. The disruptive action took place in front of the headquarter of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). Some demonstrators were carried away by police officers by force. Law enforcement units had to use a shovel truck and specialists with climbing gear to unchain protesters sitting on top of the drilling rig construction and to clear the road.
Previously the Extinction Rebellion initiative announced through its website and social media that it would protest for 4 days in the government district of Berlin and disrupt operations with blockades. Apart from that around 40 climate activists also broke into the grounds of the Jänschwalde lignite-fired power plant in Brandenburg and affected its operations on Monday early morning.
