UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world faced a 'winter of discontent',

as he gave his opening remarks on day one of the general debate at the 77th UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

"Let’s have no illusions, we are in rough seas," he stated. "A winter of global discontent is on the horizon. A cost of living crisis is raging, trust is crumbling, inequalities are exploding and our planet is burning. People are hurting with the most vulnerable suffering the most."

"United Nations charter and the ideals it represents are in jeopardy," he continued. "This crisis threatens the very future of humanity and the fate of our planet."

Following the Secretary-General’s address, the 193 member states of the UN take turns to discuss current global issues, with the final day of the general debate on September 26.
