Description

Venezuelan voters in Buenos Aires cast their ballots in the presidential election in their home country on Sunday.

"We are all fighting, we are all going out into the streets to exercise our vote and say that we want freedom, we want independence, we want to go out into the streets to give our country a future, to seek the well-being of our country," voter Emanuel Massa said.

Footage shows voters inside and outside the polling station, with people outside holding Venezuelan flags, chanting, and drawing and writing on a large banner. A police presence was also observed around the location.

Another voter Socorro Teran claimed that 'the majority' of Venezuelans overseas 'want to return' to their country. "We have our families, our homes and we want to recover them, our country as the nation, which is our Venezuela," she stated.

According to media reports, Venezuelans in Buenos Aires faced difficulties with registration, with the embassy having technical issues over the past two weeks.

President Nicolas Maduro is seeking a third consecutive term in office. Maduro has been in power since 2013, while his United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) has governed the country since 2007.

His main challenger is Edmundo Gonzalez, a 74-year-old former diplomat. Opposition frontrunner Maria Corina Machado backed Gonzalez after she was banned from taking part amid corruption allegations which she denies.

Around 17 million people are eligible to vote. Polling stations are open between 6am and 6pm local time, with results expected to be announced on Sunday evening or over the next few days, depending on the turnout and margin of victory.
