Russia supports a draft joint declaration on forests and land use which aims to end deforestation by 2030, President Vladimir Putin told COP26 climate summit delegates via video conference on Tuesday.

"We hope that its implementation will stimulate a closer partnership among all interested states in the preservation of forests. This will undoubtedly help to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere," Putin said, speaking from his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo.

He added preserving forests and other natural ecosystems was a "key component" in addressing global warming, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"Setting the goal of building a carbon-neutral economy no later than 2060, Russia is relying, among other things, on the unique resource of our forest ecosystems and their significant potential to absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Our country contains around 20 percent of all the world's forests," the president said.
