Description

Police used water cannons and tear gas during anti-government protests in Lyon on Tuesday, as demonstrations sparked by Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms continued across the country.

Footage also shows riot police clashing with protesters, activists waving red flares and piles of rubbish burning in the streets. At least one demonstrator was seen being detained. Smashed glass from windows and bus shelters was also visible, as crowds of demonstrators marched through the city.

Protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s changes to the pensions system, including raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, have been ongoing since they were announced in January.

Demonstrations intensified after the government passed the reforms without a vote in the National Assembly.

Unions have promised to continue with their large-scale protests and strikes, while the Macron government argues that the changes are needed to keep the retirement system sustainable.
