Police used tear gas as protesters took to the streets of Tehran on Sunday amid a growing public outcry against the government after it admitted accidentally shooting down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing 176 civilians, after initially denying responsibility for several days.

On Saturday, Iran's armed forces admitted the plane was "unintentionally" shot down after it was mistakenly identified as a cruise missile by Iranian air defence systems.

Ukrainian International Airlines (UIA) flight PS752 was shot down minutes after take-off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport on Wednesday, sparking a diplomatic spat as Western leaders blamed Iran for the incident, which the Iranian government at first denied.
