The press secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs said that 34-year-old demonstrator Alexander Taraykovskiy died on August 10 during the clashes in Minsk.

According to the ministry, the man was trying to throw an unidentified explosive device towards the police, but the device went off in his hands which caused the protester’s death.

The presidential elections took place in Belarus on Sunday, August 9. According to the Central Election Commission, President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994, won the election with 80.1 percent of the vote.

The opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya received just over 10 percent of ballots.

After the announcement of preliminary results of the elections the wave of mass protests hit the country, accompanied by clashes with law enforcement officers.

According to Health Ministry about 250 people were hospitalised. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported 6,700 detentions and one death.
