Belarusian police used water cannons to disperse a mass rally against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Victors Avenue in Minsk on Sunday.

Thousands of demonstrators could be seen marching through the avenue before being dispersed by water cannon. Military equipment could be also seen around the area.

Footage also shows riot police officers arresting several protesters during the demonstration on the avenue. According to media reports detentions were reported in several areas in the capital.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election of August 9 that saw incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.

On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus. 

European Union and the USA imposed sanctions against a number of Belarusian officials who were allegedly accused of vote-rigging and political repression.
