Description

Chile's Club Deportivo Palestino (Palestinian Sports Club) football players denounced what they called 'a year of genocide' ahead of their match against Coquimbo in Santiago on Sunday.

The team's display of solidarity with the Palestinian people came a day before the one-year anniversary of Hamas's attack on southern Israel and the start of Tel Aviv's subsequent military operation in Gaza.

Footage shows the football team wearing Palestinian keffiyehs while holding up a large banner reading 'One year of genocide, 76 of occupation'. Fans can also be seen chanting and waving Palestinian, Chilean, Iranian and Lebanese flags.

"It is very sad and gives a lot of impotence that the International community does nothing against the atrocities of the genocide," one Fan said. "This community pushes and supports of course everything that means the Palestinian cause for the ancestors and relatives from whom we all come."

Club Deportivo Palestino was founded in the Chilean capital in 1920 by a community of Palestinian immigrants. The club won the national championship in 1950 and again in 1978.

The club has actively supported Palestinians since the war between Hamas and Israel began on October 7, 2023 and has also previously funded football schools for boys and girls in the Palestinian territories.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups launched an unprecedented assault on southern Israel. Israel reported that 1,139 people were killed, mostly civilians and that Hamas fighters had seized at least 251 hostages before returning to Gaza.

In response, Israel initiated an air campaign and a ground offensive into Gaza, where Palestinian authorities claim over 40,000 people have since been killed, although the death toll is thought to be higher.

Israel has strongly denied allegations of 'genocide', also made by a number of countries at the International Criminal Court, and says its actions in Gaza are in self-defence and against Hamas operatives and infrastructure.

A number of hostage-prisoner swaps have taken place, although talks to agree a permanent ceasefire have stalled. The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a 'limited' ground incursion against militant group Hezbollah following a campaign of airstrikes. The sides have conducted cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
