Santiago Sanchez Cogedor, a 42-year-old adventurer who loves sports, started walking from the Matapinonera Stadium in Madrid's San Sebastian de los Reyes on Saturday heading to Qatar, where he hopes to reach the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the end of the year.

The players of the UD San Sebastian de los Reyes football club greeted Sanchez before his departure, wishing him a safe trip to his final destination.

"The trip will be a journey that will make me a better person, a better human being. It will be continuous learning, nights in loneliness, and I want to share that with the people I am with," Cogedor commented.

Sanchez went to Saudi Arabia by bicycle before, this time he will complete his trip walking. He will carrying his suitcase with wheels behind him. In his suitcase, Sanchez has a gas stove, water purification tablets and his tent, in which he will sleep during his 11 month journey to reach the Gulf state.

Sanchez's trip also has an environmental goal. He aims to plant trees and collect garbage during his 6,800 kilometre (4225 miles) journey.

"[I will be] collecting waste, planting trees and leaving that little seed of love in the hearts of many people," he explained.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022. Both Qatar (as the host nation) and Spain will take part in the tournament along with 30 other national teams which will each be divided in eight groups of four teams.
