Description

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that European energy law applied to Nord Stream 2 "both in letter and in spirit,” in comments made during a press conference with Russia’s top diplomat Sergei Lavrov following their joint talks in Moscow on Tuesday.

She also said that if energy projects of this kind were used as a 'weapon,’ this would then also have corresponding consequences.

"For infrastructure projects, all energy infrastructure projects - including Nord Stream 2 - are of course subject to European energy law, both in letter and in spirit," said the German foreign minister.

For Baerbock, the meeting came as part of her first official visit to Moscow and first meeting with Lavrov. Currently, a number of issues are straining German-Russian relations, including the delayed Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, which awaits regulatory approval, in addition to tensions at the Russian-Ukrainian border.
