Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s son Gus was seen in tears - and calling out 'that's my Dad!' - as his father accepted the nomination for vice president on the third night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Thursday.

The emotional scenes came during Walz senior's address, after he told his family directly how much they meant to him following their struggles with fertility issues and treatment.

"It took Gwen and I years but we had access to fertility treatments and when our daughter was born we named her Hope. Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world…and I love you," Walz said, while Gus is shown mouthing: "that's my Dad!"

"I'm letting you in on how we started a family because this is a big part about what this election is about," Walz continued. "Freedom! When Republicans use the word ‘freedom’, they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor's office, corporations, free to pollute your air and water and banks, free to take advantage of customers."

Walz also paid tribute to the achievements the party had made.

“We cut taxes for the middle class, we passed paid family and medical leave. We invested in fighting crime and affordable housing. We cut the cost of prescription drugs and help people escape the kind of medical debt that nearly sank my family," he said.

He also claimed that Republican nominees Donald Trump and JD Vance’s 'project 2025' will "make things much harder for people who are just trying to live their lives".

Meanwhile, American actress and talk show legend Oprah Winfrey also took the stage and claimed that "decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024".

"There are people who want you to see our country as a nation of us against them, people who want to scare you, who want to rule you, people who would have you believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe, that there is a right way to worship and a wrong way to love. People who seek first to divide and then to conquer. But here's the thing. When we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us," she said.

Winfrey also encouraged voters to choose 'common sense over nonsense', 'optimism over cynicism', 'inclusion over retribution' and added: 'that’s the best of America'.

US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg also addressed the DNC audience, saying that Republicans were 'doubling down on negativity and grievance'.

"Darkness is what they are selling," he added.

The Democratic National Convention runs from Monday until Thursday, August 22. Incumbent US Vice President Kamala Harris, who was confirmed nominee earlier this month after a number of high-profile endorsements, is scheduled to close the convention.
