Description

Dozens of demonstrators gathered in Berlin on Saturday to show solidarity with Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, urging his release from prison.

Protesters gathered in front of the German chancellery and marched to the Russian embassy building, repeating the same route as the rally from January 31, carrying signs and banners demanding the release of political prisoners and calling for Russian president Vladimir Putin to step down.

The protest ended peacefully shortly after the group arrived at the embassy in the city centre.

The Kremlin critic was taken into custody on January 17 upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he spent nearly five months recovering from an alleged Novichok nerve agent attack. On January 18, Navalny was sentenced to 30 days in jail for breaching parole conditions of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction.
