Description

The nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party voted to make a call for Germany's exit from the EU part of their election campaign programme, after a two-day debate session with more than 170 motions for modifications, during their party conference in Dresden on Sunday.

The move to include 'Dexit' in the platform came despite party co-leader Jorg Meuthen, who is also a member of the European Parliament, warning against adopting the proposal.

"We consider Germany's exit from the European Union and the establishment of a new European economic and interest community to be necessary," reads the resolution.

Co-leader of the party's Bundestag group, Alexander Gauland, stressed that "you have to read this 'Dexit' motion thoroughly."

"We don't want to simply quit the EU but that we propose an alternative model with different countries. This means we continue saying that the European economic community is a right thing, but we don't want a further expansion of this Europe towards a kind of unitary state," he said.

The manifesto is also set to include proposals to severely restrict immigration, including that of skilled workers, and includes a call to block family reunification for refugees and for the return of physical infrastructure and controls on Germany's borders.

The party also aligned itself against current rules in place to curb the COVID-19 pandemic at the state and federal level, urging instead for an end to lockdowns and for preventative steps to be left to 'responsible citizens' to decide for themselves.

The AfD currently lies in fourth place in polling ahead of September's general election, sitting at around 11 percent of the vote in most polls, with all other parties ruling out forming a coalition with the party over its stances on immigration, cultural integration, and the EU, among others.
