Description

A fire escape at the Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Architecture's guesthouse was one of the few structures left undamaged by powerful earthquakes in an area of Hatay on Monday.

Footage also shows the site of many collapsed buildings, after the two quakes hit the border region of Turkey and Syria.

21-year-old survivor Mehmet Sevket Koseoglu said that he was trying to retrieve personal items from his house, already damaged by the earthquakes of February 6, when the new tremors struck.

"We were trying to take [our things] in a controlled way since the first day of the earthquake. The building turned into rubble after yesterday's earthquake, without getting anything," he explained.

"I was surprised that after yesterday's earthquake the fire escape was still standing even though all the damaged buildings were demolished," he continued.

The latest tremors came exactly two weeks after deadly earthquakes devastated parts of Turkey and Syria, with many buildings collapsing and thousands left trapped. The death toll from those earlier quakes has recently passed 47,000.
