The Palestinian Civil Defence in Gaza said three Palestinians were killed and 15 injured in an Israeli airstrike on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Salah al-Din school housing displaced people in Gaza City on Wednesday.

Footage shows a man holding the body of his child as the mother weeps, as well as locals burying the body of the child in an empty field near the school. The video also features the mass destruction caused to the school, as Civil Defence crews stand by.

“He was playing in the courtyard. When the missile hit, we came out running. I found my son lying on the ground. Praise be to God, he is a martyr. I entrust him to God,” said Mohammed al-Sousi, the child’s father.

“I was inside the school when it was hit by three missiles by the Israeli occupation. All the victims were children and civilians. I know their names and their faces. None of them were involved [in the resistance], they were all children,” added Abdul Nasser Hussein, a displaced man.

The Israel Defence Force (IDF) confirmed the strike on Salah al-Din school in a statement. The IDF stated that the ‘precision strike’ by the Israeli Air Force operation was carried out ‘under the supervision of the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and the Israeli Intelligence Service’. It claims the attack targeted ‘Hamas terrorists who were operating inside a Command and Control Centre’.

“The Command and Control Centre was located inside a compound that was formerly the Salah al-Din School in Gaza City. Hamas operatives used the compound as a hideout and base to plan and carry out attacks against IDF forces and the State of Israel,” the statement noted.

The IDF added that ‘steps were taken to minimize the risk of harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence.’

The Israeli army has targeted Salah al-Din School with several strikes since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Fighting in Gaza has been ongoing for over 10 months. On October 7, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 40,223 people had been killed and more than 92,981 injured at the time of publication.
