Description

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov described billionaire Elon Musk’s recent comments, about how many residents of the Donbass and other disputed territories had an allegiance to Russia, as a 'statement of reality', during a briefing with journalists in Moscow on Thursday,

"This is actually the real state of affairs," said Peskov. "And indeed the population in eastern Ukraine has lived there for centuries and it has been Russian."

"And of course, let's say, those people who are capable of processing information, thoughtful processing, people who are capable of analysing, stating reality, they come to that conclusion. And they confirm it. That's rather how I would view it," he continued.

On Thursday, the SpaceX founder and Tesla CEO posted a map on Twitter with the results of Ukraine’s 2012 elections, with the areas to the east of the country shown as backing the 'Party of Regions', which Musk described as 'pro-Russian'.

"Most of Ukraine unequivocally wants to be part of Ukraine, but some eastern portions have Russian majorities and prefer Russia," Musk wrote.

The comments were part of the billionaire’s ideas for a wider 'peace plan' for Ukraine, in which he stated that concessions should be made to Russia, and even put it to a poll of his followers. Those who voted rejected his proposals by 59.1 percent to 40.9 percent.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, responded to the poll by posting: "F**** off is my very diplomatic reply to you."

President Volodymyr Zelensky also conducted his own Twitter poll, asking followers if they preferred the version of Musk 'who supports Ukraine' or the one 'who supports Russia', which gave him a result of 78.8 percent to 21.2 percent in favour of the former.

Meanwhile, Peskov also commented on the White House response to the OPEC+ decision to cut oil production, after press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre accused the organisation of 'aligning with Russia'.

"OPEC and the OPEC+ format have repeatedly confirmed their reputation as very responsible structures that are actually responsible for stability in world energy markets. Of course, the adopted decisions are aimed at stabilising the oil market," said Peskov.

"We are not talking here about co-operation with any particular country, our country or any other," he continued. "Everyone has an interest in ensuring that the markets are stable. Many countries understand the absurdity of the dramatic steps being considered at the moment in the European Union, being pushed by the United States, to introduce price ceilings and so on."

On Wednesday, OPEC+ members decided to reduce supply by two million barrels a day from next month, arguing that it would stabilise market volatility. The US and its allies claimed it would trigger rationing and only lead to higher prices.
