US Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin laid flower wreath during the ceremony at National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia, on Wednesday.

"We have repaired the damage to this building. But we know that we cannot repair the damage to your hearts. No words can take away your grief. No amount of time can make sense of the worst terrorist attack in American history," he said.

This Wednesday, a huge US flag was displayed on the Pentagon building in memory of the victims, as footage shows.

184 people were killed when a passenger airliner crashed into the Pentagon On 11th of September, 2001. At the World Trade Centre in New York that day, 2,606 people died and another 44 more lost their lives when a plane crashed over Pennsylvania.

A total of 2,977 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. 19 hijackers took over four commercial jets, with three flown into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Somerset Country, Pennsylvania.
