Description

Heavy smoke rose over Beirut on Friday, as Israel claimed it had launched a huge airstrike on the headquarters of the Hezbollah organisation.

According to local media, four buildings were destroyed in Haret Hreik area.

It came just hours after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu warned that his country 'can strike anywhere'.

Earlier, Israel's airstrikes on southern Lebanon continued for a fifth day, with 25 more people reported killed. The latest campaign of airstrike began on Monday, and killed at least 700 people in total according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

On Wednesday, the United States, France and others called for an immediate 21-day ceasefire, but Netanyahu said his country would "continue to strike Hezbollah with full force" and "will not stop until we achieve our goals".

Israeli Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi told troops that the strikes were "both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah", hinting at a potential ground invasion. Hezbollah has also launched hundreds of rockets and missiles into northern Israel.

Tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated over the past two weeks, following mass pager and handheld radio explosions. Hezbollah blamed on Israel, while the IDF did not comment.

The sides have been exchanging cross-border fire since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in October 2023.
