Description

An all-woman thrash metal trio has become the first Indonesian band to play at the UK's iconic Glastonbury Festival, joining world-famous headliners, including Coldplay and Dua Lipa.

In footage captured in Jakarta on Thursday, 'Voice of Baceprot' (VOB) is seen clad in hijabs while rocking out at the 'Bangga Indonesia' concert and later giving a backstage interview.

VOB vocalist Faridda Marsya Kurnia explained that the road to Glastonbury had been challenging for the band, who had encountered resistance from their parents when they started making music at high school.

"In the beginning, it was definitely a bit difficult to get permission from parents because this was something new for them. Women who work as musicians are very rare, especially in metal music and loud music," Kurnia said.

"We prefer to prove that we use loud music as a medium for expression and that it does not affect our personality. We remain good children, and we continue to go to school and study without changing anything," she continued.

As they ascended to stardom, VOB made headlines for their uncompromising sound, challenging gender and religious stereotypes. Most notably, the band received praise from rock legends Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Flea from Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Kurnia urged her fans not to 'lose hope' and to 'always be confident' enough to take any opportunity to express their creativity.

"In our age, there is much distance we can penetrate, and time we can save easily due to the internet and everything. Even if, for example, in our area, we don't have a stage to perform, anyway, we have internet, so we can just upload our performance, which can reach a wider range of people," she said.

Kurnia plays alongside bassist Widi Rahmawati and drummer Euis Siti Aisyah. The name Baceprot means 'noise' in Sundanese, a widely spoken language in Indonesia.
