Description

Lorry traffic at the port of Dover remained low on Monday, the first working day in post-Brexit Britain, as businesses are seeking alternative routes or simply decided to delay deliveries over concerns of chaos at the Kent ports.

Ireland's direct freight shipments to the European mainland is one of the bypasses being eyed out by companies after 6,000 trucks were stuck in Kent before Christmas due to the border closure.

According to reports, an average of 1,000 lorries crossed at Dover each day of the new year so far -- way below the 6,500 daily average.

A local said that the situation is much better when compared with December. "I think there is a lot of people who think it's going to be bad, but I expect it to be smooth myself," the Kent resident said.

The UK officially left the EU on 31 December, 11 PM GMT.
