Chancellor Merkel described the current pandemic situation in Germany as dramatic in her address to the Cities’ Association on Wednesday in Erfurt.

"The current pandemic situation in Germany is dramatic. I can't say it any other way. The fourth wave is hitting our country with full force,” she said in her online speech.

"And even if there is no longer a legal majority for the continuation of the state of emergency of national scope, there can be no doubt for me that we are in the middle of such an emergency," she added.

It is of the utmost importance that Federal and state governments meet tomorrow to make decisions, according to Merkel.

The Chancellor warned explicitly about the effects of the fourth COVID wave and called for concrete measures to contain it, such as the introduction of booster shots and the continuation of vaccinations against the virus.

On Thursday, the heads of the federal government and states will meet at a new Corona summit to discuss further strategies regarding the pandemic situation in Germany. A general vaccination mandate is among one of the topics.
