Description

A funeral for the commander of the IDF's 401st Armoured Brigade, Colonel Ehsan Daxa, who was killed by an explosive device in northern Gaza, was held in Tel Aviv on Monday.

"I think that the state of Israel, the IDF, and Druze people have had a very big loss. Yes, we will miss him," Hasan Marei, a friend of Daxa, said.

Footage shows soldiers carrying in the casket to Beit Ha'am in the town of Daliyat al-Karmel, home to a large Druze community. Family members, friends, and colleagues were seen mourning the loss of Daxa as his body was laid to rest.

"Ehsan was a very good person... I have known him since I was a child. We played together, he was taking care of everyone. ... He believed he could make the world better, make our lives better. In the army he was a very good commander," Marei added.

Israel's army said Daxa, believed to be the highest-ranking officer killed during the hostilities in Gaza, 'fell during combat' as media reports suggest he was killed inside a tank by an explosive device with a trip-wire in the enclave's north.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant expressed his regret about the 'painful news' and stated that Israel had lost "a leader who dedicated his life and work to the security of our nation."

The Israel-Hamas war has continued for over a year, starting with the militant group's unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing over 42,000 according to the Palestinian side.
