Description

Thousands of protesters demanding the resignation of President Maia Sandu and the celebration of early elections attended a rally in Chisinau on Sunday.

Footage shows tents set up in the square, as well as protesters chanting anti-government slogans and holding placards and flags, and police officers throwing tents over the fence.

The press service of the Shor party claimed that up to 45,000 people had taken to the streets from different parts of Moldova. The opposition also added that '20,000 citizens were not allowed into the rally by the police and other structures'.

The Republic's Interior Ministry has not commented on the statements. There is currently no official information on any arrests at the protest at the time of publication.

Thousands of people attended the first rally on September 18. The organisers, supporters of the opposition Shor party, called the tents a 'City of Change' and said they’d only leave when their conditions were met.

In May, mass anti-government rallies began in the country over soaring energy and food prices, as well as falling living standards and record inflation.
