Hundreds participated in 'for peace' march along the Gran Via in Madrid towards the Congress on Sunday, as protesters demanded the government to suspend all military supplies to war zones, such as Ukraine and Israel.
Protesters could be seen marching through the capital's streets, waving Spanish flags and carrying banners that advocated for peace, neutrality, sovereignty, and political independence.
"We are being dragged into military conflicts both in Ukraine and in the Middle East, in which we Spaniards have no interests, and yet we are contributing to the war effort, we are contributing through our inaction, and we believe that either civil society mobilises and prevents them from taking us to war," said Jose Antonio Alfaro, activist.
Throughout the march, protesters chanted slogans like 'This is not our war; it’s their interests,' 'Neither Ukraine nor Israel; these are not conflicts for Spain,' and 'There is no peace without freedom.' Their messages criticised the allocation of public resources to conflicts that do not reflect the interests of the Spanish people.
The rally, called by the Junta Democrática de España (JDE), began at midday in Plaza de Espania and marched along Gran Vía, Alcala Street and Paseo del Prado, ending in front of the Congress of Deputies.
In September, Spanish Minister of Defence Margarita Robles announced an increase in military support to Ukraine, at the same time as Spain officially ceased trading arms and military materials with Israel in October of last year.
