Description

Hundreds of people including unions and protesters took to the streets of Lyon to continue striking and protesting against the pension reform approved by the French government, on Tuesday.

Footage shows police using tear gas, and water cannons in an attempt to disperse protesters by water cannons. Protesters could also be seen throwing projectiles at police, rallying and holding placards such as ‘I know that democracy is weak’ and ‘Assassinated cops and gendarmes’.

The French Interior Ministry reported that around 740,000 people participated in 240 protests across France on Tuesday, with over 93,000 people demonstrating in the capital city. At least 27 people were reportedly arrested in the capital by the afternoon on Tuesday.

Demonstrators took to the streets in large numbers in the past weeks to protest after Macron’s government bypassed a vote in the National Assembly to force through the plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030, and extend the required employment period for a worker to receive a full pension on retirement to 43 years.

Violent demonstrations took place in cities all across the country to oppose the package and the use of the executive powers, with heavy clashes between protesters and police, drawing concerns from the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner.
