Hundreds of people welcomed the new year by sunbathing on the beach of Valencia on Saturday. New Years Day temperatures rose after an initial threat of fog that has blanketed other parts of the Valencian region.

Beachgoers shared their enthusiasm about starting the year enjoying a hot January day.

"Seeing people here on the beach, enjoying the day, come on, I predict a good year, a very good 2022, for sure," stated one beachgoer.

"Being on the beach in January and having this sun is something incredible, that few can enjoy, that I am from Madrid, and this is a paradise," remarked a tourist.

Temperatures in Valencia are unusually warm for the time of year, with a daily average of 20 degrees and completely clear skies. Some parts of Italy and France also registered unusually high temperatures during the week.
